Swimming Lessons – How to Swim Backstroke

Doing the backstroke in the water can be a relaxing and smooth swim if you understand how to do it correctly. With swimming lessons, you should have no problem perfecting the motions and proper technique. Prior to taking swimming classes, there is some information that can be beneficial to you.
The first thing to keep in mind is that you will be floating on your back. For this reason, it is not always easy to see where you are at and where you are heading. Safety is important and it is imperative you are aware of your surroundings. The last thing you want to do is run your head into the side of the pool. A number of pools will have flags hanging to warn you that the wall is 10 feet away. Make sure you pay attention to these signs.
The overall motion involves your arms staggering each other with one arm up while the other is down. You will need to learn to blow air out of your nose so that you can tilt your head back to see the side of the pool. It can be painful if you get a nose full of water.
Now that you understand a few basics of swimming the backstroke, let’s get into how you actually perfect the stroke. The first step is going to be you floating on your back in a horizontal position. You will need to kick your legs up and down much like you would with freestyle, just the opposite direction.
Unlike freestyle you want to keep your legs straight and not rigid with your toes pointing out. Your swimming lessons should teach you to simply brush the surface of the water as oppose to making large splashes.
As soon as you have your legs rotating up and down, next you will pivot slightly at the waist thus rotating your shoulders while performing a windmill with your arms. As mentioned above, you will have one arm that is straight as it is raised out of the water from your waist to an extended position. The other arm will be bent while pulling your cupped hand in the water. Make sure your hand goes into the water pinky-first.
Remember to keep your head floating back in the water while looking up at all times. If you begin to tilt your head forward, your entire body will naturally sink making it difficult to properly do the backstroke.
